The role of the Registry
The Registry plays a central role in the day-to-day operations of the Supreme Court of Canada.
The Registry is the point of contact between the parties and the Court. It is responsible for processing, recording and directing the flow of all documents filed by parties.
The Registry staff will do everything they can to help you. The table below lists things the Registry can and cannot help you with.
Registry staff are able to:
- give you information about what forms to use and give you information to help you fill out some of the forms
- give you information about how the Supreme Court of Canada works
- provide copies of applicable Court forms, which are also available online
- verify your forms and other court papers for compliance and completeness
- For example, ensuring that documents are signed, comply with the Rules of the Supreme Court of Canada and that any cited attachments are included and signed
- give you the opportunity to make changes to the documents you have submitted if they do not comply with the Rules of the Supreme Court of Canada or if there is missing information
- give you information about the status of your application for leave to appeal or your appeal
Registry staff are not able to:
- give you legal advice
- tell you if your application for leave to appeal raises an issue of public importance
- tell you what words to use in your documents
- tell you if you have included enough information
- tell you what the decision of the Court will be or give you any opinion about what it might be
- allow you to communicate with the Registrar or a judge at any time
Still have questions?
The Registry is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm (Eastern
